Regent Park Post Halloween Tips

Halloween

Halloween just finished a few days ago so here are some thoughts about overdoing the candy consumption.

Halloween came and now has gone for lots of the families here in Regent Park of downtown Toronto, but it has left behind a huge mountain of candy and chocolate that’s going be very hard to resist. We at Sumach Dental know that it will be very, very hard to resist. This is because all these treats are really tempting, but the most important thing in all of this is to remember that moderation is key.

This is because it really can affect your teeth. At Sumach Dental we know that enjoying a few pieces here and there won’t harm you right away. But this can have a lasting effect on your teeth. Here are some tips to keep you and your kids healthy post Halloween.

Why limit the sweets?

Candy and chocolate are packed with sugar, and we know that causes the environment for cavity, causing bacteria. Once sugar lays on your teeth it feeds the bacteria to produce acids. Now these acids can and will weaken your tooth enamel. Now what does this do? It leads to cavities, sensitivity, and overtime even gum disease.

Now where it gets trickier is when you get to sticky candies like caramels and gummy’s. These especially stick to your teeth and can be hard to clean off, making them the absolute worst for tooth decay. And on the other end, we have sour candies which are acidic in nature and wear down enamel way quicker.

Here are four tips for you.

  1. Choose chocolates over sticky candies because chocolate is easier to wash away and less likely to get stuck on the tooth.
  2. After having some candy, rinse and brush your mouth, this will help wash away all the sugars and acids. But be careful try to wait 30 minutes before brushing, because brushing after a sugary retreat can erode the enamel which is softened by the acid.
  3. You’re gonna want to limit the candy time, instead of eating all day set a short period of time in the day. The best time is after a meal, this is because the saliva production is higher, and that will help neutralize the acids.
  4. Lastly, and most importantly, do not forget to visit your dentist. Doing regular check ups and cleanings are just as essential to prevent cavities and maintain a healthy smile for you and your kids. You know where to do that now, if your reading this.
